Emotions are the energy that moves us - sometimes we refer to them as 'motivation' - we can see that whatever we are doing well is an outcome of specific emotions. All that we are not doing or believe we cannot do is also the outcome of specific emotions. Shifting emotions will change the way we talk, think, move, and interact. Depending on what action we want to create, we might choose a different fuel. They are at the source of all our activities in life and therefore need to be investigated and understood.

Our body, emotions, and thinking are intricately linked, and hence any change in one produces a change in the others. If your thoughts are triggered by an emotion that isn’t helpful, you can intervene and change your thinking. If you are envious, you can shift from thinking, “I wish I had what my neighbor has,” to “I’m grateful I have those things I have.” This shift in thinking will move you from envy to gratitude. Similarly, any shift in your body, such as exercising or posture, will shift your emotions and thinking.

A learning-based approach to navigating your emotions

Step 1: Understanding Emotions

The first step in emotional learning is the ability to name the emotion we are experiencing. Day-to-day, most people only recognize or regularly use the name of 15 to 20 emotions such as Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Anxiety, etc. Although there is no universal list of emotions, there are probably around 250. Simple math tells us that we are accessing less than 10% of our emotional potential.

Step 2: Noticing Emotions

The second step in building emotional fluency is reflecting on the information or message our emotions are trying to get us to notice. Are we angry, and what is the injustice we are encountering? If we are joyful, what about our experience is showing us that life is worth celebrating? Various emotions may feel similar, but they are distinct. An inability to identify them precisely can lead to inappropriate responses.

Step 3: Navigating Emotions

Most people believe that their emotions are fixed. They think that we are born with a certain emotional makeup, and they have to live with it. This is not true, and modern studies tell us that we can learn to shift them when we choose. We have been growing emotionally throughout our life. If not, we would still have the emotional maturity of a child. Thus, we all have the opportunity to deepen our emotional understanding intentionally.

What makes learning emotions different from intellectual learning

The way we learn emotions is different than learning cognitively. We learn intellectually through insight. We hear an idea, see a model, or are presented with the solution to a technical problem, and suddenly, “we get it.” Emotional learning occurs through immersion and not through insight. You also need to practice and develop emotional habits, which take time.

The good thing about learning emotions is that you are always in the laboratory. There is not a single moment, we are not experiencing an emotion. However, you might not even be aware of their existence if you haven't developed the habit of identifying and noticing them.
